What is Myopia and Myopia Management?
Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry while nearby objects remain clear. It typically begins in childhood and can progress as your child grows.
Managing myopia early is crucial because unchecked progression can lead to higher prescriptions, which not only affects vision but also increases the risk of serious eye health complications later in life. By intervening early, we can help slow the progression of myopia, ensuring your child enjoys better vision and reduced long-term risks.
What Treatments Are Available for Myopia Management?
At Oracle Opticians, we offer a range of evidence-based treatments tailored to your child’s needs:

Specialised Myopia Control Contact Lenses:
Daily disposable soft contact lenses designed to slow down the progression of myopia. We will fit and teach your child to look after their contact lenses.

Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses:
Glasses with lenses designed specifically for myopia management can help slow progression while offering clarity and comfort. We currently use myopia management lenses from the latest suppliers with the latest of lens technology.

Lifestyle Adjustments:
Spending more time outdoors, limiting screen time, and encouraging regular breaks from near work can complement clinical treatments.
Our team will guide you in selecting the most suitable option for your child’s lifestyle and visual needs.
The Risks of Progressive Myopia
As myopia progresses, the prescription gets stronger, which can increase the risk of serious eye health conditions in adulthood, including:
Retinal Detachment:
A higher risk of the retina detaching from the back of the eye.

Glaucoma:
Increased pressure within the eye, leading to potential vision loss if untreated.

Cataracts:
Early onset of clouding in the lens of the eye.

Myopic Maculopathy:
A condition where the central retina becomes damaged, leading to permanent vision loss.
By managing myopia early, we can reduce the likelihood of these complications and safeguard your child’s long-term eye health.
