Age Related Macula Degeneration

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that affects the macula, a small but important part of the retina at the back of the eye. The macula is responsible for sharp, central vision, which we use for activities like reading, driving, and recognising faces.
AMD can occur as we age. It can cause blurry or distorted vision. Not everyone will develop AMD, but for those that do, it may lead to a loss of central vision. Peripheral (side) vision usually remains.
Types of AMD
Dry AMD:
The most common type.

Happens when the macula thins over time due to aging.

Vision loss is usually gradual.

Wet AMD:
Less common but more serious.

Caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina, which can leak and damage the macula.

Vision loss can occur quickly without treatment.
